Marketing your business is the hottest topic on the Inspired Birth Pro blog. Many of us are led to do birth work because we are passionate about helping women and families. Doing the necessary footwork to get business in the door, however, can be a challenge. Our guest post today is by Leanne Sedentopf and she has some great suggestions for attracting new clients.
It's one of THE most common questions that is asked, not only by new Doulas but by all new business owners.
We pour our passion into our training and learning how to best support our clients and then when we are ready to start accepting clients…crickets.
You are left wondering "Where are all of the lucky families that I want to support?"
This happened to me and I felt deflated and started to question my value and if I had made the right decision to pursue a career that I loved. It's amazing how quickly the self-doubt can creep in isn't it?
But, before I called it quits I took some good advice and hired a business coach. That was a big game changer for me. She helped me to recognize that not only was I a Doula and Nutritionist – I was a business owner.
When I started approaching things from a business perspective (a heart-centered business that is) everything shifted for me.
I realized that what I was offering to my potential clients was super valuable and that they just didn't know it yet.
It's noisy out there!
Every time we turn around we are being flooded with ads and marketing trying to vie for our attention. Your ideal clients want to work with you, and it's your job to let them know that you exist and that you can help them.
So, to answer the question – how do I get more clients here are two key things that have worked well for me…
Offer a Free Resource in exchange for joining your e-newsletter…
A free gift is a way to invite potential clients into your world and start to help them get to know you, get to like you and get to trust you through your offerings and by connecting with them consistently through an e-newsletter.
I use my Postpartum Resource Package as my free opt-in gift.
When potential clients sign up for my e-newsletter they get my Postpartum Plan for free. Then, from there I get to start building a virtual relationship with them via email by connecting with them approximately once a week and providing them with lots of great free tips and information.
You can consistently promote your freebie on Social Media, in Facebook Groups and on your website – with an opt-in box on your home page and linking to it throughout related blog posts.
People are more likely to want to work with you either now or in the future if they have had an opportunity to get to know you, get to trust you and get to like you.
I've had great success getting both Nutrition and Doula clients to connect with me this way. Not everyone is going to buy from you right away, they want to get to know you first and see what you are all about.
If you are a Postpartum Doula, I recommend that you connect with families during pregnancy to start building that relationship and rapport before they know they need you. Then, after baby is born and they realize more support is needed they will already have you and your awesome services on their radar! Sweet right?
The best way to reach your Ideal Client is to get yourself right in front of them!
I've held multiple, highly successful free workshops (again using my Postpartum Resource Package as the topic) that have filled rooms with my ideal clients (many of which have later become paying clients).
Choose a topic that is important to your ideal client and create an hour long workshop. This is a fantastic way to connect with a lot of people at once, establish yourself as the expert and really start building the know, like, trust factor.
One big tip here is to make sure you are collecting email addresses during your live workshop event. Handing out your cards or brochure is great, but people are busy and cards get lost. You want to be in the driver's seat and nurture this growing relationship. Give them a basic handout at the workshop and then promise them the full package via email afterwards.
I'm going to say it again…people are much more likely to want to work with you if they feel like they KNOW, LIKE and TRUST you. So, get in front of them. Establish yourself as an expert and build relationships. Do this and the clients will start to flow. Get out there online AND in person!
These methods have helped me feel much more genuine in my approach, much less "salesy" and has resulted in a lot more paying clients. Great, right!?
Families expecting a baby are hungry for information and it's our duty (I believe) to provide them with valuable, reliable information to support them through the myriad of choices and decisions they have to make as a family.
